Structures and Properties of New Organic Molecule-Based Metals, (D)2BrC2H4SO3 [D = BEDT-TTF and BETS]

An organic anion, 2-bromoethanesulfonate (BrC2H4SO3?), provides one bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene (BEDT-TTF) and two bis(ethylenedithio)tetraselenafulvalene (BETS) salts, the compositions of which are ?’’-?’’-(BEDT-TTF)2BrC2H4SO3 (1), ?’’-?’’-(BETS)2BrC2H4SO3 (2), ?-(BETS)2BrC2H4SO3 (3), respectively. Compound 1 shows a metal–insulator transition at around 70 K. 2 is isomorphous to 1, 3 polymorphic with 2. Compounds show metallic behavior least down 4.2 The pressure dependence electrical resistivity also reported.

A new BEDT-TTF-based salt with an organic free radical TEMPO has been prepared. The salt consists of alternate layers of conducting and magnetic sheets, between which are short S(BEDT-TTF)...O(TEMPO) contacts. The magnetic susceptibility is well modelled by the combination of a Curie-Weiss and a 2-D Heisenberg models with J = -89 K and θ = +0.05 K.
